A 28 year old Chirumanzu man who robbed his paternal uncle of $20 after threatening to hit him with a hammer has been slapped with an effective 45 days jail term.

Tafadzwa Mahuni of Mangoma in Chirumanzu went to Panganai Mahuni’s homestead in Matavire village in February last year with the intention to borrow $20 which he wanted to use as bus fare to travel to his wife’s rural area.
When Mahuni, who is an elder brother to Tafadzwa’s father, failed to assist him he produced a hammer and threatened to harm the complainant if he failed to give him the money.
Fearing for his life the old man gave Tafadzwa $20 but later went to make a police report leading to the arrest of the accused person.
Gweru magistrate, Tendai Madanhire, initially sentenced Tafadzwa to 90 days in prison before suspending 45 days on condition the accused pays $20 restitution to the complainant.
The state’s case was that on the 14th February last year Tafadzwa went to his uncle’ s place with the intention of borrowing money as he intended to go and visit his wife who was not feeling well at her rural home.
When his uncle told him he had no money to spare the accused became angry and produced a hammer which he used to threaten him to give him the cash.
Out of fear Panganai gave Tafadzwa the $20 but later on went to report the matter to the police leading to the accused person’s arrest.- NEWZIMBABWE
